You Get to Enjoy Your Life: How to Stop Waiting for It to Get Better

I had a realization this morning that felt almost embarrassingly simple.

I get to enjoy my life.

A woman holding a baby in the park playground.

Not someday.

Not when everything is figured out.

Not when the house is finally clean.

Not when I get back into my old jeans.

Not when I get better at managing my time.

Not when the kids are easier.

Not when I finally feel like myself again.

Today.

I get to enjoy my life today.

It’s Sunday.

My husband is outside cutting the grass. My girls are in the pool. I’m inside with my newborn baby attached to me like glue, and at some point today there will probably be laundry, dishes, snacks, someone asking me for something, and a movie playing in the background.

And honestly?

This is the shit I want.

This is the life.

And I don’t want to spend it mentally somewhere else.

I think we do this without realizing it

We spend so much time trying to become the woman we want to be that we forget to actually enjoy being the woman we are.

We tell ourselves:

When I get the house together…

When I get back into a routine…

When I lose the baby weight…

When I have more energy…

When I start taking better care of myself…

When I figure out what I actually want…

When I have more time…

When I feel more confident…

Then I’ll feel good.

Then I’ll relax.

Then I’ll enjoy myself.

Then I’ll finally feel like me again.

But what if there is no magical moment where everything clicks into place?

What if there is always going to be something?

Another mess.

Another phase of motherhood.

Another thing to organize.

Another goal.

Another version of yourself you’re trying to grow into.

And if we keep postponing our happiness until we’ve finally “arrived,” we could spend years waiting for a life that is already happening.

You don’t have to become her before you enjoy your life

Maybe you’ve been so focused on becoming that you’ve forgotten to notice who you already are.

The woman sitting on the floor playing with her kids.

The woman making dinner while music is playing.

The woman who hasn’t showered yet but is laughing so hard she can’t breathe.

The woman who wants to start dressing differently.

The woman who wants to take better care of herself.

The woman who is exhausted.

The woman who is figuring things out.

The woman who doesn’t recognize herself quite yet.

The woman who knows there’s more inside of her.

She’s still you.

You don’t have to have everything together to enjoy her.

You don’t have to feel confident every day.

You don’t have to love every part of your body.

You don’t have to have your routines perfectly established.

You don’t have to know exactly what the next chapter looks like.

You can be unfinished and happy.

You can be overwhelmed and still have a beautiful afternoon.

You can be tired and still laugh.

You can be in the middle of changing your life and still love the life you have right now.

Maybe happiness is smaller than we think

I think we sometimes expect happiness to feel like a huge transformation.

Like one day we’ll wake up and think:

There... I’ve made it.

But lately I’ve been wondering if happiness is much quieter than that.

Maybe it’s the baby sleeping on your chest.

Maybe it’s your kids screaming with laughter in the backyard.

Maybe it’s clean sheets.

Maybe it’s putting on an outfit you actually feel good in.

Maybe it’s sitting outside with your coffee before everyone wakes up.

Maybe it’s taking yourself on a walk.

Maybe it’s calling the friend you’ve been meaning to call.

Maybe it’s putting your phone down and watching the movie.

Maybe it’s having a glass of champagne on a Sunday afternoon because you can.

Maybe it’s doing the laundry while your family is all piled onto the couch.

Maybe it’s looking around your house, even with the mess, and thinking:

I really love these people.

I really love this life.

Not because it’s perfect.

Because it’s yours.

You can want more without missing what you have

This might be the part I need to remind myself of the most.

Wanting to change doesn’t mean you’re unhappy.

Wanting to grow doesn’t mean you’re not grateful.

Wanting to feel better in your body doesn’t mean you have to hate the body you’re in.

Wanting a cleaner house doesn’t mean you can’t enjoy the messy one.

Wanting a different routine doesn’t mean today has to be miserable.

Wanting more for yourself doesn’t mean you have to reject who you are right now.

You can want more and still be here.

You can dream about the woman you’re becoming while loving the woman who’s getting you there.

And maybe that’s what becoming really is.

Not constantly rushing toward some future version of yourself.

But learning how to fully inhabit the woman you are today.

Happiness isn’t the finish line

I keep thinking:

Happiness isn’t something you finally arrive at after you build the life you want. Happiness is something you practice while you’re building it.

I don’t mean that you can simply decide to be happy and everything difficult disappears.

Life doesn’t work that way.

There will be hard days.

There will be seasons that stretch you.

There will be things you wish were different.

But there are also moments happening right alongside all of that.

And we get to notice them.

We get to let them count.

We get to stop rushing through the good parts because we’re so focused on getting to the better parts.

So maybe today, you don’t need to fix anything.

Maybe you don’t need to become anything.

Maybe you just need to be here.

Play with your kids.

Take the walk.

Put the laundry in.

Make the coffee.

Call your friend.

Get dressed in something that makes you feel good.

Sit outside.

Hold your baby.

Laugh.

Let the afternoon be an afternoon.

Let your life be your life.

Because this isn’t the life before the life.

This is it.

And you don’t have to wait until you’ve become her to enjoy being you.

Maybe becoming her means learning how to do exactly that.

A little reminder for today

What have you been telling yourself you need to accomplish, fix, change, or become before you can really enjoy your life?

And what if you didn’t wait?

What if there is something beautiful happening today that you don’t want to miss?

You don’t have to have it all figured out.

You don’t have to be finished.

You just have to be here.

Your life is happening now.

With Love,

P.S. If this letter found you at exactly the right time, I think you'll love The Threshold. It's where we begin turning these words into lived experience.

Crossing the Threshold

If this article felt like someone finally put words to what you've been carrying, you're exactly who I had in mind when I created The Threshold.

The Threshold guided reclamation experience with a gold pen on a neutral background, created to help women rebuild self-trust and move beyond survival mode.

The Threshold isn't another productivity system or self-improvement checklist.

It's a guided reclamation experience for the woman who's ready to rebuild self-trust, reconnect with herself, and begin living from intention instead of survival.

Because understanding the pattern is powerful.

Living differently is where everything begins.
